Magnus, the Red
Magnus, the Red with custom nipple chains.
I gave it my all on Magnus. It took about 100hrs from start to finish but I tried to leave no detail untouched, with everything as refined as I could get it. With the lessons learned I could probably get a similar quality at around 50-60hrs if I had to do it again. The intricacy of the leg armor and the sheer surface area of the wings made painting them very time consuming. Overall so pleased with the end result and there is a noticeable difference in the quality of my work after painting this piece.
Many layers of adding lines and then glazing over it
Wings have been my nemesis in the past so I wanted to make sure that they were a focal point of the model since they are so large. I added alternating layers of lines and glazes to build up the texturing on the feathers. I added a bit more of a cold glaze to the bottom sections while leaving the upper more warm. In hindsight I think I could have pushed this a bit more to give it even more contrast but the idea is interesting.
I sculpted the bottom section of the mask and added nipple chains per my client’s request
My client bought this Magnus second hand and was not happy with the face that was chosen (the cyclops one) so I sculpted over the eye as well as the bottom section of the gold mask. I then had to freehand the eyes since I figured that it would be easier to paint symmetrical eyes than sculpt symmetrical eyes. My client also wanted nipple chains so I cut a small piece of a metal bracelet and used miliput to adhere them to his nops.
Some people prefer the bare chest, some prefer the nipple horns- I prefer the nipple chains

If you happen to read this and are interested in improving your skills at miniature painting, I highly advise that you try and push yourself on a model outside of your comfort zone if you’ve plateaued for a bit. You’d be surprised on what you can accomplish and the lessons you’ll learn in going all out.
